Easy Ways to Capture Beautiful Family Photos: What to Wear & How to Coordinate
Family photos are some of our favorite keepsakes, but figuring out what everyone should wear can sometimes feel like the hardest part! The good news? Creating a beautiful, coordinated family look doesn’t mean everyone needs to match perfectly.

Here are a few of our favorite tips for making your next family photo session easy and beautiful.
1. Start With a Neutral Color Palette
When in doubt, go neutral!
Cream, oatmeal, camel, soft brown, dusty rose, muted sage, denim, and warm earthy tones photograph beautifully and create a timeless look you’ll still love hanging on your wall years from now.
Instead of putting everyone in the exact same color, choose 3–4 coordinating shades and mix them throughout the family.
For example:
Cream + camel + denim + muted floral
Mom might wear a cream sweater with denim, Dad could wear camel or brown, and the kids can bring in soft prints and textures that tie everything together.
2. Coordinate — Don’t Match
Gone are the days when everyone needs to show up in identical white shirts and jeans!
The prettiest family photos usually have a collected, coordinated feel. Start with one outfit you absolutely love — often a dress for one of the girls — and build everyone else’s outfits around the colors in that piece.
A subtle floral dress can be paired with a neutral sweater for a brother, denim for Dad, and a coordinating solid or textured look for Mom.

3. Mix Textures and Subtle Prints
Texture adds so much interest to family photos, especially when you’re working with a neutral palette.
Think chunky sweaters, corduroy, denim, soft knits, ruffles, woven fabrics, and layered pieces. Small florals, understated plaids, and delicate patterns are also an easy way to add personality without overwhelming the photo.

4. Don't Forget the Tweens & Teens
Coordinating family photos can get a little trickier once you have older kids who have very definite opinions about what they wear!
We get it.

Where you're taking your photos can help determine your color palette.
For an outdoor fall session, warm creams, browns, rust, muted greens, denim, and subtle florals are gorgeous.
For spring photos, try ivory, blush, dusty blue, sage, and soft floral prints.
If you're taking photos indoors or in a studio with a neutral backdrop, texture becomes especially important. Sweaters, layered dresses, denim, and subtle prints help keep your photos from feeling flat.
And for Christmas photos, you don't necessarily have to wear bright red and green! Cream, camel, deep green, burgundy, plaid, and other rich neutrals can give you a festive look that still feels timeless.
6. Keep Everyone Comfortable
This might be our biggest tip — especially with little ones.
If a toddler is uncomfortable, you're probably going to see it in the pictures! Choose soft, comfortable pieces that allow kids to move, cuddle, play, and be themselves.
Don't worry about getting every hair perfectly in place or having everyone look directly at the camera in every shot, either. Some of the best family photos happen in the in-between moments — walking together, laughing, snuggling, or letting the kids play.
7. Lay Everything Out Before Photo Day
A few days before your session, lay everyone's outfits together on the bed or floor.
Take a quick photo with your phone.
You'll immediately notice if one outfit is too bright, if you're missing a color somewhere, or if you have too many competing patterns.
As a general rule, choose one or two prints and let the rest of the family wear coordinating solids and textures.
